President Robins gave a brief introduction to the University of Toronto, and warmly welcomed our students to apply to Victoria University in the University of Toronto. The University of Toronto is a public research university in Toronto, Canada. Founded in 1827, with rigorous academic attitudes, it has developed into a top university in the world.

While given the chances to talk with Mr. Robins, students raised questions actively and creatively. Mr. Robins answered each question patiently. He was also deeply impressed by the students’ fluent spoken English and authentic pronunciation.
Parts of the interaction are as follows:
Q: What makes University of Toronto a world-renowned university in your mind?
A: What makes University of Toronto outstanding is the incredible research that happens there. There are more than one hundred institutes affiliated to University of Toronto all doing top level research. And as I said, almost all the subjects are there, from science, physics, engineering, to social sciences and humanities. The faculty members are very strong. The number of research papers published by University of Toronto professors is Number 2 in the world, behind Harvard. So it’s really because of that research powerhouse that our university is so respected.
Q: In the admission interview, what talents or qualities of the students do you value most?
A: We’re looking for students who are creative. And in Canada generally, the most important thing is your high school grades for determining admission. It is necessary that you are excellent in English. For all of you, it is not a problem, because you all speak excellent English, (Laughter)but for most international students, it is a big challenge.
Q: I would like to major in chemical engineering in University of Toronto. What do I need to prepare now?
A: As I said before, for admission into University of Toronto, your high school grades and English ability are essential. Besides, the best thing you can do is to build up your teamwork skills. In chemistry, there are lots of labs and opportunities to do research and you need to work with different people. People value teamwork ability, the ability to listen, to think critically, and to provide your advice. This is the soft skill that’s hard to judge in the application, but we know people with this skill do best in the University of Toronto and in Victoria.
Q: How do you define an excellent student?
A: The students who do well in Victoria are the students who come to university to find out only two things. The first thing is “What is my greatest talent ?”; the second thing is “What are the world’s greatest problems and which is the problem that I can help solve with my talent ? ”. In the university, they find out the match between these two things to make a difference to the world.
Q: I know it’s very hard to balance study and social activities in university. So can you give me some suggestions?
A: This can be a very difficult questions even for me!(Laughter)I think first of all you need to learn some skills on managing time. Actually, University of Toronto is a strong research university, so students often study a lot. So usually our problem is to make sure our students can take some time to do something relaxing. And we offer a lot of clubs and opportunities and encourage students to take advantage of the opportunities outside the class to meet people from different cultures. We believe that excellence flourishes in an environment that embraces the broadest range of people. We have dancing clubs, theatre clubs and so forth. We even have dragon boat club and badminton club, because I know many people love it.(Laughter)And we also have some counselors to help students with that problems.
Q: As a successful person, what sports do you like to do in your spare time?
A: Sports? Ah!(Laughter) Oh,I used to play tennis and squash. But now I do yoga.(Laughter)
Q: What is your impression of Chinese students ?
A: You are the first groups of Chinese students I am speaking with here and my impression is very high. I think the schooling you are receiving here is excellent. You are very thoughtful and very excellent. The Chinese students who come to University of Toronto are very strong, technically. They are very strong in technical skills, mathematics and science. And they are also diligent.
In this meeting, students fully demonstrated the education philosophy of BFLS - cultivating “well-rounded international talents with foreign language specialties”, and they were also deeply inspired by Mr. Robins’ great personal charisma. President Robins expressed that he strongly believed BFLS would have a prosperous and promising future. He also expected more students could study in University of Toronto in the near future.
